Match Highlights

Well, this stinks.  I was supposed to be watching this match in person in two weeks, but alas, Puertollano raised objections to moving the match, and the LFP reversed the decision to reschedule the match.  Nevertheless, Villarreal must continue without my presence in the stands, and will attempt to continue their general uptick in form.  They will have to step things up and keep Puertollano off the scoreboard to advance to the next round of the Copa del Rey.

Since the last match, Villarreal continued its turnaround with a 5-0 thumping of Tenerife and a 4-1 drubbing of Lazio.  Result-wise, the weekend match against Sevilla didn’t bring in any points, but Villarreal have to feel good about how they played for most of the match in a very difficult environment against a team in great form.

Puertollano followed up the Villarreal draw with a 0-0 away draw to mid-table Real Ovieda, and then a 3-0 blowout of cellar-dwellers UD Lanzarote.  They now find themselves in seventh place in Group 2, with 19 points through 12 matches.

Villarreal will be thrilled to have reinforcements to make things a bit easier.  Marcos Senna and, shockingly, Joseba Llorente, are both available for this return leg.  Also, Nilmar has served his suspension and will be available for Valverde, but y0u have to wonder if the manager is going to like the idea of turning Nilmar loose when Puertollano, already a heavy-challenging team, might look to get a little revenge for that elbow.

The injuries, as well as international duty for the Uruguayans, are keeping things a bit thin.  Ibagaza and Cazorla are out through injury.  Diego Godin and Eguren have traveled to South America.  Valverde only 16 players for the match, leaving Fuentes and Fuster out for a technical decision.  Obviously, and unfortunately, Fuentes is done with Valverde.  I don’t understand the Fuster decision, though, considering the lack of depth in the midfield.  The squad:

Keepers: Diego López and Xavi Oliva.
Defenders: Gonzalo, Kiko, Ángel, Marcano and Capdevila.
Midfielders: Marcos Gullón, Bruno, Cani, Escudero and Marcos Senna.
Forwards: Llorente, Rossi, Nilmar and Jonathan Pereira.

We should be able to pull this out.  We have a full set of options up front, and goalscoring, which wasn’t coming easy leading up the the first leg, has suddenly become much more frequent.  I think we pass through with a comfortable 3-1 victory.

    huh? but made the 16

Valverde never fails to amaze me…………………….

  4. Kenez says:

With no game this weekend it hard to understand why Fuster has been omitted except that Valverde has to reduce the squad to 16 for this competition and has five midfielders and four forwards already. It’s expected that Valverde will send out this team tonight.
    Javi Oliva
    Ángel – Gonzalo – Kiko – Marcano
Cani – Marcos Gullón – Bruno –Escudero
    Nilmar – Pereira

  5. Nick says:

I was hoping to see Hernan Perez included again but it will be good to see how Marcos does in the Eguren role. I’m actually feeling slightly confident!!

been swamped for a few days with a law school memo, but i’m back! i taped the lazio and sevilla games and was trying to avoid the score in the latter, but i had to follow today’s match. hoping for a stream on justin.tv– you can “rewind” those to a certain time of day and watch later. i’ll be listening via radio if you want me to control the game thread, maddi.

  7. Kenez says:

Here’s a surprise! Capdevila, Senna, and llorente all start. Valverde must be taking it seriously.

    Javi Oliva
    Ángel – Gonzalo – Marcano – Capdevila
Cani – Sennan – Bruno –Escudero
    Nilmar – Llorente

  8. jackson says:

ankle injury r tricky. so y start llorente?

  9. sidarth says:

stupid valencia playing at the same time. but they scored early, so maybe they will switch over to our game.

  10. maddi says:

Currently 0-0 in the 38th minute. I am not watching, but I can only imagine Puertollano are playing very deep in defense. Anyone got any insight on the progress of the match?

  11. sidarth says:

minimal action it seems. escudero had a good chance but failed to convert. not too much happening though, so we should be very wary. a clean sheet does get us through…

  12. Nick says:

I’m just following Marca’s game thingy, gist of it is we’re dominating. In other news Valencia are 2-1 up but have had Alexis sent off! Come on Alcoyano!!

  14. Kenez says:

    HT 0-0

Three clear chances for Villarreal but Puertollano have had the best one.

  15. sidarth says:

0-0 halftime. some whistling at the end of the half about a hard foul on angel. in the other games, valencia and atletico madrid are moving on.

  16. jackson says:

    villarreal & senna don’t mix u valverde.

  17. Nick says:

Half time supposedly best chance of the half went to the visitors but Oliva made a good save!

  18. Kenez says:

Remember we don’t have to win tonight. If we can keep a clean sheet we would go through on the away goal.

    :(

is valverde really da right choice 4 villarreal? jury is still out.

  20. sidarth says:

man this is nerve-wracking. and the radio guys are not even covering our game. if we are scored upon, it will be out of thin air anyhow…

  21. sidarth says:

Rossi and Pereira in, not sure who came off. I’d assume Nilmar and Llorente.

  22. sidarth says:

commentators are stunned that puertollano failed to score. of course a defensive error by gonzalo. he is killing us this season. but somehow it is still 0:0.

  23. maddi says:

    Goal Villarreal

  24. sidarth says:

finally!!!! rossi makes it 1-0. pass from cani to pereira to the italian, who may just have found his goalscoring form. but a goal against still sends it to extra time…

  25. maddi says:

Giuseppe Rossi in the 75th minute (I think it was the 75th)

  26. Nick says:

    Rossi to the rescue

  27. jackson says:

    gol g.rossi

  28. sidarth says:

and again the commentators are stunned. puertollano leaves another golden chance by the wayside. by the skin of our teeth…

  29. sidarth says:

and a post for puertollano. it remains 1-0 somehow.

  30. Nick says:

    Red card for puertothingy

  31. Kenez says:

Red card to Pelegrina(Puertollano) for a push on Cani

  32. sidarth says:

according to marca, puertollano are down to 10. hard foul on cani resulted in a straight red. i missed it on the radio feed, though. hopefully we can get this tie over with now…

  33. maddi says:

Puerto are down to ten men after a hard foul on Cani by Pelegrina. This comes right after a scoring opportunity for Puertollano, so hopefully things will calm down and the match will finish up quickly.

  34. maddi says:

Anyone else noticing that Madrid has not yet scored and the first half is almost over against mighty Alcorcon? The press is going to have a field day if they can’t get a goal over two matches.

  35. maddi says:

Goal Alcoyano against Valencia, tying it up at 2. If I am not mistaken, that result would take Alcoyano through? I can’t remember…

  36. sidarth says:

3 minutes left at the madrigal. and amazingly, valencia are trying to hang on for dear life against alcoyano. 0:1 in the first leg and 2:0 today is now 2:2, so alcoyano could advance with a late strike.

  37. maddi says:

Sorry, I was wrong. Alcoyano still need another…

  38. Kenez says:

    Full time 1-0

  39. sidarth says:

And we advance! 1:0 today, 2:1 on aggregate. But we aren’t going any further in this competition with this sort of effort. A clean sheet is nice, even if highly fortunate. Lots of credit to Puertollano, who proved more-than-capable opponents.

  40. maddi says:

That is quite a relief. Now, for a bit of rest for the team….

  41. sidarth says:

Sad news: Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke died in an accident at age 32. He played for the German national team and FC Barcelona in the past.

  42. Nick says:

Very sad, sounds like it was a suicide. Threw himself in front of a train. Nothing has been officially said so it could be different. Thoughts with his family. RIP

  43. rahul says:

its really sad when people who inspire and motivate u pass away. god bless him.
