Villarreal’s up and down season has continued over the last couple of weeks, seeing the 3-1 victory over Valladolid followed by the ugly 1-0 loss to Gijon. Villarreal played well midweek to advance in the Europa League. They now have to put all of that aside and make a serious effort over the next month to climb the La Liga ladder and get into competition for the European spots.

Getafe are an enigma. So far on the season, they have six wins and six losses. They have some impressive wins – over Valencia and Athletic Bilbao – but also a disappointing loss against Almeria. What is most intriguing is their goal-scoring trends. In five matches, they have been held scoreless, but in their other seven matches, have totaled 19 goals, including an opening 1-4 away thrashing of Racing, and most recently, a 5-1 drubbing of Xerez. Most notably, perhaps, for the first time all season, Getafe are following up on back-to-back wins. They now sit comfortably in ninth place, only two points out of Europe.

Villarreal have the general feel of improvement over the last few matches, but things are still shaky. They have won three of the last five, showing the first signs of life after a listless start. Despite this, there is no question that at any moment, they can completely fail to show up on the pitch, like last week’s heartless 1-0 loss at Sporting Gijon.

Villarreal will be missing a few players for the match. Gonzalo is out because, of course, he is coming off a red card. It is at the point that perhaps it should only be mentioned when he is not coming off a red card! Also in defense, Javi Venta has not recovered from the muscle he pulled against Valladolid. Unfortunately, both David Fuster and Ariel Ibagaza – two players that seem to bring out the best in Valverde’s playing style – are out. Fuster is still out after going down against Levski Sofia in midweek. Ibagaza suffered a bruise to the right thigh, and is expected to be back for the Atletico match. Joseba Llorente made the lineup, but he is coming off a few days of gastroenteritis, so don’t expect him to get the start, or have much energy if he makes it onto the pitch. The squad:

Keepers: Diego López and Xavi Oliva.
Defenders: Marcano, Ángel, Godín, Capdevila and Fuentes.
Midfielders: Cani, Eguren, Marcos Senna, Santi Cazorla, Bruno, Pires and Escudero.
Forwards: Jonathan Pereira, Nilmar, Rossi and Llorente.

I really do not know what Valverde will bring today. I can’t imagine him wanting to put Senna and Bruno/Eguren in midfield, but without Fuster and Ibagaza, he might look back to the traditional double-pivot and play a bit conservatively. Theoretically, with Santi back, he could put Pires in as a withdrawn striker, with Cazorla on the left and Cani on the right.

Important note for today: the match is on GolTV at 1pm, and today you should be able to see the VillarrealUSA banner up behind the goal to the right, when viewing on your television screen, next to the banner for Els Flamencs Grocs.

Getafe have never won in El Madrigal. Four defeats and one draw in five visits. The draw came last season around this time of the year when Getafe took a three goal lead within half an hour. Villarreal came back in the 2nd half with goals from Pires, Eguren and Rossi.

I think that with the absences the team more or less picks itself. I can’t see Fuentes getting a start so the defence will be unchanged. A double-pivot of Senna and Eguren, Rossi and Nilmar upfront and Cani and Pires out wide. Cazorla will probably be given around 20 minutes all being well.

With little option to make rotations how fresh will the team be after their midweek game. I can’t see them keeping a clean sheet and think it might be another draw.

HT Las Palmas 0-0 Villarreal B

  3. sidarth says:

Halftime- Las Palmas 0:0 Villarreal B. Our former player Antonio Guayre (who scored one of the most important goals in club history, defeating Lille in the 2005-06 Champions League group stage to win the group), has had a number of dangerous chances. But our goalkeeper Juan Carlos has stayed strong in the face of strong pressure from the home side.

Let’s see if we improve in the second half. More bad news for our neighbors Castellon: as results stand, they’d return to the bottom of the table.

  4. Kenez says:

Line up for Villarreal confirmed. Bruno gets the nod over Eguren.

    Diego López.
    Ángel, Marcano, Godín, Capdevila;
Cani, Marcos Senna, Bruno, Pires .
    Nilmar, Rossi

  5. sidarth says:

Fulltime- Las Palmas 0:0 Villarreal B. Finished with a lot of whistles from the home fans and Las Palmas on the back foot. Good result on the balance of play.

  24. Nick says:

I like the amount of pressure we’re putting on Getafe, forcing them to give the ball away a lot.

  25. sidarth says:

1-1 HT. great first half. really should be up a goal. need to return to the field with that intensity, and the goals will come.

  26. kqql says:

I think there was at least 1 P>k for Villarreal there………………but Villarreal never get thoses calls in Liga till they are crystal Clear..

  27. kqql says:

The defense of Getafe is not as strong as Sporting…

  28. kqql says:

Lopez needs to distribute the ball better

  29. Nick says:

    Penalty yes, red card no!

  30. kqql says:

  41. kqql says:

Defense wins the game for Villarreal.

    Godin to Capedvilla.

Santi changes the team for the good (Cani is more defensive player)
Getafe made to paid to taking the gas of the pedal.

    and
the refs decision rallied the team….

  50. maddi says:

Wow. I had to watch it about an hour behind, since I was obligated otherwise.

That was an incredible team effort to come from behind when down a man. What a team victory! That should do a lot to pull the team together (assuming that we will be able to field a team with all these recent suspensions….)

As to the banner – for something that looks so large up close (it is 5 feet long), it sure looked small out there! It was further to the right than I expected it to be, but it got on screen a few times, with one very clear shot of the words “The US Penya”. Happy with the way it looked, wish I could have afforded to make it bigger!

Some thoughts: Cani should have been subbed at half time. He had two left feet the entire match. It was worse than those times when he simply disappears – possibly, in my mind, his worst match in a Villarreal shirt. He might have completed 25% of his passes in the first half. That being said, he didn’t deserve the red card. It was a penalty – which was Angel’s fault – but no way Cani being knocked over into the Getafe player deserves a red card for Cani. Hopefully that can be overturned midweek – it should definitely be appealed.

I have never seen Capdevila hit a ball like that with his right foot. What a laser! Great game altogether for Capdevila – his defense was point perfect, and a brace to boot!

Senna played well, generally much more quickly than he had recently. I think he is getting Valverde’s message that things have to move quickly. And he and Bruno made a great partnership in midfield.

I don’t put that much blame on Marcano for the first header that lead to the goal from Pedro Leon. It was a difficult cross, and in most cases, his header would have broken the play up. He was just able to get a touch on it, and in most cases, that is the right thing to do.

Angel was a liability all night. He had a couple of decent crosses, which is his strength. His defense was atrocious.

Nilmar was not incredibly involved, but he definitely earned a penalty that was not given.

Rossi played well. I do not think he got tired, Kqql. I think he was a constant danger, his only down point in the night being the flat shot when he was 1v1 with Ustari; that should have been a goal, and strikers can’t miss those. Otherwise, he showed a lot of movement, a ton of effort, and a lot of heart.

Welcome back Santi!!! What a shot, what a golazo!!

Good match from Valverde. He reacted well, and made the right decision in not substituting immediately following Cani’s expulsion. Our possession actually went up from that point, and we looked more energized.

  51. alex says:

I think Cani’s red card stems from FIFA’s “foul last man = red card” rule, no matter how benign the foul.

  52. kqql says:

So what does it take for Villarreal to get a P.k this season in Liga?

    1 P.k denied vs Rossi and 1 vs. Nimar…………………………

W/Santi and Ibagaza back, Cani will be on bench again and yes Alex that Red Card was per Fifa last man rule.

I noticed something what Nick said about Nimar……………….from the info he got……….. Nimar doesn’t play back to the goal @ at all………..

    Hello Usa ^^

gone by the hair to the team and played a little confused about what we pay, the better Cazorla

    Sorry about my English

Saludos desde España estamos encantados de tener una peña Norteamericana ^^

if next year is sold to Rossi Altidore back, so we would not need to sign anyone else

    ^^

    Endavant Vilareal!!!

  54. jackson says:

4 me da best player was bruno. he fits in w/valverde system well. worst were angel & cani . 4 nilmar to succeed he needs change his style a bit. cazrola had good return &
hope fully can stay healthy. back troubles can b tricky.

  55. Nick says:

Angel can be good one day and very poor the next. He gives a lot of fouls away but on his day he can provide some brilliant crosses. I think perhaps next summer we should invest in a new right back. Rafinha from Schalke or Ilsinho from Shaktar (two Brazilians) would be perfect!
