Didn’t have time to get a preview up for the match, but I rest on the fact that the match doesn’t mean anything to the team other than a potential slight bump in the club’s bank account.  Regardless, a win would be great.  Notably, RBS will be without the very dangerous Janko for the match, which should come as a welcome relief for our back line.

On a side note, Villarreal are releasing a new official website tomorrow. I will be looking forward to that.

The match starts just after 3pm eastern time.  I will not be around for this match thread, because Villarreal’s match will be shown tape-delayed at 8pm eastern tonight on GolTV.

    With both teams already qualified they will take the opportunity to rest key players. Most of the players required for the game on Sunday will be held back tonight and the least used players will have an opportunity. Three of the B team, Kiko, Marcos Gullón and Matilla, have been training with the first team and it’s expected that one or two could start tonight. The starting XI could possibly be as follows:
    Oliva
    Ángel, Gonzalo, Kiko, Marcano;
    Pires, Bruno, Matilla, Escudero;
    Llorente, Pereira.

    Very cold weather in Castellon today and as a result there is likely to be a lot of empty seats tonight.

    Here’s the 18-man squad. Kiko and Matilla called up; I’d expect both to start.
    GKs: Diego López y Xavi Oliva.
    Ds: Kiko, Gonzalo, Marcano, Godin, Capdevila y Ángel.
    MFs: Bruno, David Fuster, Pires, Matilla, Eguren y Escudero.
    Fs: Llorente, Jonathan Pereira, Nilmar y Rossi.

    I think Kenez has the lineup spot on. I’ll watch the game on tape tonight (after my last final) and talk with everyone about it tomorrow.

    Not sure if anyone was able to watch the match, but the banner got a 15-second zoom-in closeup during halftime while Schoen was talking up Giuseppe Rossi. Not bad!

    Now the match, that was bad. A cold night and a meaningless finale of the group stage meant the stands were empty and quiet. Villarreal were not horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but had no creativity for the final pass. We probably had about 65% of the possession during the match, and there were moments of brilliance from Escudero and Bruno.

    The goal came from a combination of a horrible play from Angel, Gonzalo, and Oliva, but after that the defense looked more solid. Seems like a trend.

    I am off into the freezing, snow-covered woods until Saturday night, so Nick and Sidarth will handle things around here on their own in my absence. I still have not posted those pictures, but that sounds like an excellent Sunday afternoon project.

    villarreal have it tought against wolfsburg. n if they get through then i think they wud have to face rubin kazan or tel aviv i think rubin is stronger so facing them n beating them wud be no easy task but without dominguez they wud be weak. lets see im keeping my fingers crossed.
    out of teh spanish teams valencia n athletic dont have it difficult especially valencia. but atletico r up against rijkaard’s galatasary i doubt then can beat them with this pathetic manager they have.
    as for teh english fulham are definitely out theres no way they gona get a result away from home. while everton n liverpool have it relatively easy.

    Just saw the game this morning. I’ll have more next week, but Escudero, Bruno, and Rossi stood out in a good way; Oliva, Eguren, and Gonzalo, in a bad way. Nilmar and Llorente were quiet; Rossi is the only attacking player who had some spark. We should’ve taken a point, but Salzburg are a very impressive side. Of all the players we’ve seen this year, the one signing I want is Ugandan central defender Sekagya. He completely shut down Nilmar, which is quite a tall order. Jony is the almost-man of our club: he creates some chances but his final ball is lacking, or he gets into good positions and then only wins corners or falls down and doesn’t draw fouls.

    I think a full XI will put together a much better performance on Sunday against Racing. It was obvious that the XI against Salzburg was unfamiliar with one another, as I’ve never seen Jony on the right side of midfield, and I’m sure he and Escudero have never played together. Nilmar and Llorente is our most physically-imposing pairing up front, but they had little interplay. In terms of B team players, Kiko and Matilla held their own.
