I think everyone is breathing a sigh of relief at this one.  Ernesto Valverde has been fired after a horrible performance by Villarreal, losing 0-2 to a middle-of-the-pack Osasuna side.  The team looked like it had no confidence at all, and the entire stadium was reverberating with whistles.  Fernando Roig and Jose Manuel Llaneza finally came to the point that they could not let the momentum towards middling that Villarreal had developed to pull the club any further down.

At this point, Villarreal do not have a new manager, but have put Garrido, manager of the B team, in charge.  If he does well, I could see him getting the job permanently, considering what he has done with the B team.  More to come, for sure….

EDIT (by sidarth): I think I know how our readers feel, but here is a poll from Marca. Interesting results so far…for the record, I voted yes. And not because of the Osasuna home loss; I have a lot more respect for that side than many do.

However, with all of the hopes placed on winning the club’s first major title and the favorable draw, losing to Celta Vigo over 2 legs in the Copa del Rey 1/8 finals was unpardonable. How can you lose 0-1 at home with a full ‘A’ team squad when the ‘B’ team had won 0-2 in Vigo? If the coach is unable to win against lower-division opposition AND is not developing our younger players (who are pretty good, by the way), then he’s not doing his job. Adios, Ernesto.

wow. glad he is gone. His footballing vision was not right for the style of play Villarreal had developed throughout the Pellegrini era. I am very interested to see who becomes the permanent head coach.

MARCA reports that Garrido will indeed take charge of the team until the end of the season. So who will be coaching Villarreal B?

In the long term, this could be a good move. He knows the B team boys well, and many of them will be ready to move up after this season.

Valverde has a decent pedigree, he did well with Espanyol and was doing well in Greece. There were not many other coaches who were available who could present his sort of CV at the time.
I’m positive that he will come good in the long run.

I’m relieved…I couldn’t wait for this day to come. I hope Garrido will do well and that the B team continues to do well too.

Will the board be regretted for not choosing Manzano?

I love Garrido for his brand of football. There will be an adjustment period, as the A team is much slower and less impressionable than his boys. But he absolutely has earned the opportunity: years in semipro leagues and with Villarreal from the ground up. Congratulations are in order; this is yet another Villarreal success story.

I think I was consistent on Valverde: he needed time to learn the players’ abilities and make transfers as required. The Copa del Rey exit was unacceptable; January was long enough to have figured out the squad. The firing is a signal that the board cannot wait to act until next year: we need $ from the Europa League or a top-6 finish in La Liga.

Also, our young players need to develop: let’s hope Garrido brings many of them into the mix. This is great news for Marco Ruben and Joan Oriol, two players whom the A team could use immediately. Also Jony Pereira scored the winner for Betis in his first start in Segunda; hope we don’t regret that transfer in the long run.

umm out of all teh coaches being said available i think rijjkaard n spalleti wud have been teh best had they still been available. how about someone from south america like alfio basile or jose pekerman. i think if we can get pekerman it wud be great or luis aragones he did wonders with spain im sure he wud do wonders here too.

Here’s an odd one. Edmilson signs for Zaragosa, they have to be desperate.

What I said in the match thread :
Garrido has done a fantastic, a really amazing job with the B team. I’d be quite happy if we gave him a chance until the end of the season. The B team should be ok, they only need a few more wins and I can’t see them going into freefall. I’m intrigued to see what Garrido can do. I mean that’s where Guardiola came from! He’s done alright for himself!

Although I am no fan of sacking coaches mid season, something that happens far too often in Spain, I can’t really argue against Valverde’s sacking. I think he could have turned it around but things were not improving fast enough. The performance v Osasuna was one of the worst I’ve ever seen from Villarreal. Hopefully this quick changeover to a new coach will work to our advantage. Perhaps it was always the boards Plan B.
