As an avid B team follower– though it’s been hard to find streams recently– maddi wanted me to write about our new manager Juan Carlos Garrido. Having failed to do this in the Valverde era, I figured the clock was ticking until June (when Garrido’s contract is up). I think Garrido will stick around for a few years, though, and here’s why.

Demeanor: What we first noticed about Valverde, aside from his physical condition as an ex-footballer, were his sideline antics. Like Pellegrini, Valverde was rather reserved on the touchline, but his emotions were not reassuring– dour looks rather than positive encouragement.

In contrast, Garrido is much more positive, but this may correlate with the low expectations placed on a B team manager, not to mention that winning cures all ills. Let’s see how he handles somewhat out-of-favor veterans Robert Pires, Ariel Ibagaza, and Javi Venta. All in all, I expect a more positive atmosphere around the club.

Familiarity: As a Washington Capitals fan, I understand why Garrido’s coaching history works for a club with a successful developmental system. And there’s no disputing that Villarreal has one of the best academies in Spain; Garrido’s nine years in charge of it surely played a part. As a soccer fan, the success of Pep Guardiola at Barcelona is inspiring but utterly unrealistic.

But Garrido already has a greater familiarity with our personnel than Valverde ever did. Sure, Valverde coached and played in La Liga for years, but aside from his time at Espanyol, Villarreal CF was irrelevant. At best, Valverde knew of Capdevila (then at Deportivo), Javi Venta, Angel Lopez (Celta), Senna, Cani (Zaragoza), and Llorente (Valladolid). That’s not enough to play Pellegrini-style football.

Expectations: Garrido will benefit from lowered expectations after the disastrous start to this campaign. My patience with Valverde through the end of 2009 stemmed from a belief that, while the squad may be the strongest in club history, building a team like Pellegrini’s would take time. Unfortunately, with the unceremonious Copa del Rey exit and continued mediocrity in the league, time was not on Ernesto’s side.

If Garrido takes the club from its current 10th position to 6th by season’s end, he will be a hero. That’s 8 points away with 18 matches left, though we’re only 9 points above the drop zone. And of the teams ahead of us, I’m only confident that Athletic Bilbao will be in the top 8 by season’s end. Call me crazy, but teams like Mallorca and Deportivo have a lot of work left to finish above mid-table.

And here comes a nice stretch of games to right the Submarino Amarillo. If we get a result in Mallorca, February sets up perfectly to make up ground on our direct rivals, as Athletic and Deportivo come to El Madrigal. Quickly developing a squad rotation will be important, as the Europa League returns in two weeks.

Conclusion: The pieces are in place for Juan Carlos Garrido to succeed as Villarreal CF’s next manager. The entire club is behind him, and he knows what the players, management, and fans expect. Senor Garrido, it’s time to stand and deliver.

Much is made of Barcelona’s academy and Pep Guardiola’s time in charge of Barcelona B but it’s Villarreal B that are in Segunda A not Barca’s B team. All Villarreal’s teams from juvenile through youth up to the C and B teams play in a similar style so it was strange that Valverde moved so far away from that.
For such a fairly experienced manager how did Valverde get it so wrong? The team in the final season under Pellegrini was not without it’s faults but I believe it could have been reasonably successful without any major changes at the start of the season. Any changes could have been introduced gradually. My idea of a manger is that he should get the best out of the resources available to him. His man management skills appear to be somewhat lacking. There’s no criticism coming from the dressing room but the treatment of Fuentes at the start of the season could not have been encouraging. More recently the exit of Eguren seemed inappropriate.
I believe Garrido was always seen as a future 1st team manager but the departure of Pellegrini probably came to soon. The failure of Valverde has now forced their hand. I don’t know whether he will have instant success but at least the football should be more attractive.

For such a fairly experienced manager how did Valverde get it so wrong?

BECAUSE he had no Personal Skills/no Motivational Skills and his style of football long/put ball was disliked by many players.

His mannerism on sidelines was pathetic…………

Villarreal which prides itself in possession/short pass ground game should have NEVER hired Mr. Super Liga Greece / High Ball/ PUNT Ball Football.

He should go back to Greece or apply for Position w/lower PL club or coca cola club, he will do well there.

->>>>>>>>>>>Some one @ the Villarreal was asleep @ the Wheel……………….
when they hired Valverde…………wrong guy for the squad in hand

I figured him out on 8/30/09 ..first game @ Osasuna………..was I right or what !

–La idea del club es desprenderse de todos los jugadores cedidos. ¿No?

Villarreal will likey not keep any players who are at loan this season….

Here’s an interesting one, Paco Herrera to takeover as the trainer of Villarreal B.

Herrera coached Castellon last season and was for a time assistant to Rafa Benitez at Liverpool.

And the first change of the Garrido era:
    http://villarrealcf.es/principal_n.php?nombreModulo=noticiasDetalle&idnoticia=9459&idseccion=7&idmenu=90&idsubmenu=125
Marco Ruben called up to the A team, as Rossi has flown back to the United States for personal reasons.

GKs: Diego López and Xavi Oliva.
Ds: Capdevila, Marcano, Godin, Gonzalo, Ángel and Javi Venta.
MFs: Escudero, Pires, Cani, David Fuster, Ibagaza, Bruno and Marcos Senna.
Fs: Nilmar, Llorente and Marco Ruben.

The B team only has 4 defenders for today’s game against Cordoba, as Kiko, Mario Gaspar, and Mateo Musacchio will miss out via suspension, while Joan Oriol is injured. Let’s see how that works out. Also, there will be a nice tribute before the game to Edu, who has retired after 11 years with the club.

Hope you guys over there on the East coast aren’t too badly hit with the snow! Good to see Ruben called up, hopefully he will get some pitch time! He goes from being out the door one week, to the first team squad the next!

Goals from Jozy Altidore and George Boateng helped give Hull their first win in 11 games and dented Manchester City’s hopes of a top-four finish.
Altidore gave Hull a deserved lead when he curled in his first Premier League goal, and Boateng’s unstoppable 25-yard shot confirmed the Tigers’ dominance.

    15 min Villarreal B 1-0 Cordoba Bordas

    • sidarth says:

Catala with the assist, setting up Gerard Bordas for a 1v1 which he duly converted. Keep in mind that today’s starting defenders are Catala, Carlos Tomas, Angel Ortega, and Costa. Costa was a B team reserve last year, while the other 3 played for the C team. Talk about squad depth.

The A Team players weren’t in great shape …form Vice….(minus what Valverde did) …so it will be interesting to see how they respond to the new/yet the old style again vs Mallorca which ar e in good shape, especially @ home

There are still problems with defense and Midfield…. which were also apparent in last half of pellegrini last season

    Well…………………we shall see…………….

WIn’draw or lose ,,,hopefully the A Team improves the image of football they play on Sunday….

Hopefully everything turns alright for Rossi concerning his family matter…..

  23. Kenez says:

    Full time:VILLARREAL B 4-0 CÓRDOBA

    1-0 Bordas (15′)
    2-0 Matilla (31′)
    3-0 Cristóbal (61′)
    4-0 Carlos Tomás (68′)

A great result for the B team, missing their four regular defenders and leading goalscorer.

    • sidarth says:

Incredible result. We have the most dangerous midfield in Segunda, and it showed today. Nice to pay back Cordoba for perhaps our worst defeat of the season. The B team sits at 10-6-7 for 36 points, 1 behind 3rd-place Cartagena and a whopping 13 above the drop zone. It will take a miracle for Villarreal B to go down at this point.
